FLOTUS is Insta-hip!

Michelle Obama has officially joined Instagram and for her first upload on the popular photo-sharing site, the first lady posted a picture of her and daughter Malia with several other women they met recently on the first family's trip to Africa.

"My first instagram!" Obama wrote in the caption. "So inspired and so impressed by these extraordinary young women. –mo #FLOTUSinAfrica."

Michelle also took advantage of the new video option that Facebook, which now owns the company, recently introduced by posting a 15-second clip of students performing a welcome dance at MLK Middle School in Dakar, Senegal.

Obama opened her account not long after the White House joined Instagram, and as of press time, @whitehouse is the only Instagram user @michelleobama is following. And in the short time since its launch, she's racked up 1,000 followers (by comparison, President Obama has over 2 million followers, but to be fair, he's been on Instagram a lot longer!).

We're eager to see what Barack's other half plans to share with us beyond Africa. Snapshots perhaps of the White House vegetable garden where she encourages healthy eating as part of her campaign fighting childhood obesity? Or maybe a few selfies of her trendsetting style with some pics of her latest outfits?

Either way, the Obamas are doing a good job chronicling their travels for their fellow Americans.  A photo uploaded to the White House's Instagram account showed Marine One taking off as the first family embarked on their tour earlier this week. Another video showed the warm welcome they received on their way to Senegal's Presidential Palace as crowds turned out to cheer their caravan as it rode through the capital's streets.

Up next, the Obamas plan to visit South Africa and Tanzania, though they'll skip Kenya, the birthplace of President Obama's father, due to political turmoil there.

And by journey's end, perhaps they'll have signed up for Vine too.
