We're talking about Twitter trouble, of course, a newfangled thing that's only been around for a few years and yet has managed to plague all sorts of celebrities.
In honor of that ridiculous photo of Gosselin in which she appears to be purposely slanting her eyes for the camera (which, the mother of eight biracial children says, was released without her consent and she's "the last person who could be called racist"), here are 9 more stars who've found trouble in tweet form:
1. Ashton Kutcher: A celebritweet pioneer, the Jobs star really jumped the gun when he immediately took to Twitter to bash the firing of longtime Penn State football coach Joe Paterno...before he found out that JoPa was let go because he's said to have turned a blind eye over the years to sexual-abuse allegations made against assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, who's now in prison. "Up until today I have posted virtually everyone of my tweets on my own, but clearly the platform has become to big to be managed by a single individual," Kutcher later blogged in announcing that his management would start monitoring his tweets.
2. Courtney Love: Not only did Kurt Cobain's widow take to Twitter last year to accuse Dave Grohl of hitting on her teenage daughter, Frances Bean Cobain (a move she later admitted wasn't cool—and at least she was then able to use Twitter to apologize to her kid), but she was actually sued for libel in 2011 by a law firm over tweets she wrote about one of its partners.
3. Chris Brown: When is Breezy not sticking his 140-characters-or-less-foot in his mouth? He's dabbled in N-bombs and gay slurs, he and Frank Ocean have traded disses, he's gone off on Walmart, he tweeted-and-deleted a vulgar exchange with comedian Jenny Johnson, he's sent thinly veiled remarks Rihanna's way, he...
Well, we don't spend all day monitoring Brown's Twitter activity. But despite all of the above, plus the handful of times he has yanked his account offline, he continues to use the medium to this very day to win friends and influence people.
4. Amanda Bynes: Hats off to the starlet for apparently not giving a flying fig about what anybody thinks. And most people (well, Drake, at least) have just ignored her fickle ways. But Miley Cyrus let it be known—after being called "ugly" via Twitter—that she found Bynes' recent behavior "so sad."
5. Donald Trump: Having the absolute best, most spot-on opinion about everything must be quite the burden, but the Donald generously tries to dole out as much wisdom as possible whenever the muses come calling. But with great power comes great backlash sometime, and when he was on his "Birther" trip regarding President Obama he caught quite a bit of flak from the likes of Cher, Jerry Seinfeld, Whoopi Goldberg, longtime nemesis Rosie O'Donnell and many more who, to put it mildly, didn't agree. Then, after Obama was reelected, Alec Baldwin led the charge after Trump predicted the country was in "serious trouble." And Jon Stewart hasn't been one to let Trump get away with a flippant tweet or two, either.
6. Oprah Winfrey: After spending 25 years as the queen of daytime talk, Oprah learned the hard way that constant self-promotion isn't always the way to go. Last year, the OWN maven innocently encouraged her Twitter followers—especially her Neilson box-sporting followers!—to tune into her struggling network. But not only did the twitterverse accuse her of bad form, it turns out that networks (and their owners) aren't allowed to solicit viewers or encourage changes in viewership habits. Who knew?!
7. Justin Bieber: Forty million followers notwithstanding, the teen's Twitter ways haven't always sat well with non-Beliebers. Remember when Bieber pretended to be having a Twitter exchange with someone who claimed to have stolen the pop star's laptop and was threatening to post embarrassing stuff online? But it turned out to be a hoax in order to up the hype for the Biebs' "Beauty and a Beat" video with Nicki Minaj? Yeah, we remember the whole thing being lame, too.
8. Demi Lovato: The X Factor judge is back in action now, but last year the very self-aware celeb called herself out for over-sharing on Twitter. "Who allows me to have this thing anyways?!!! I just get myself in trouble! Haha. Anyway... BYE!" she tweeted, announcing what turned out to be a very brief break from the site.
9. Kevin Bacon: We forgave him immediately, but the actor was kind enough to shoot a Vine video of himself saying "my bad" three times after accidentally spoiling-via-retweet a twist on The Following before it had aired on the West Coast.
