Angelina Jolie Testifies at United Nations Hearing on War-Zone Rape, Calls It a "Crime Against Humanity"

Angelina Jolie testified at the United Nations Security Council earlier today during a conference discussing women, peace and security.

The actress urged the council to make war-zone rape a priority and called such incidents a "crime against humanity."

She added that "hundreds of thousands—if not millions—of women and children and men have been raped in conflicts in our lifetimes."

Jolie, who serves as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, said, "the world has yet to take up war-zone rape as a serious priority."

"You set the bar," she explained. "If the…council sets rape and sexual violence in conflict as a priority it will become one and progress will be made. If you do not, this horror will continue."

The Oscar-winning actress, who donned a business suit for the occasion, also said , "Rape is a tool of war…it is inflicted intentionally to destroy the woman, the family and the community. It ruins lives and fuels conflict."

Jolie most recently spent June 20, World Refugee Day, by visiting the Za'atri refugee camp in Jordan.

According to a report from the UNHCR, Jolie and other UN officials toured the site, which is now the second largest refugee camp in the world with more than 120,000 residents, and spoke out about the dire conditions.
