Two-Faced Kitten Is Doubly Adorable (Oh, and Basically a Medical Miracle)

Two Faced Kitten NBC

Cats can get Internet famous for anything these days. Grumpy Cat is just a grumpy cat?! Since when is that a marketable skill? But Deucy isn't any ordinary kitten. She's a miracle.

Because Deucy was born on Tuesday, June 11 (a.k.a. 6/11) at 6:11am! How insane is that? Oh, and she also happens to have two faces. No big deal on that second part though.

Deucy—who we would have named Dos Catos, because we love puns and cats that have a Spanish flair—was born in Amity, Ore., and is a rare Janus cat, a cat with two faces (named after the Roman god, Janus, who also had two faces. Really, there is no original naming going on anywhere here).

Owner Stephanie Durkee explained, "The kids came in and said, 'Mom there's a kitty with two heads. And I said, 'I think you guys are just tired, you're crazy, that doesn't happen.'"

Well then everyone's crazy because it does happen: Deucy has four eyes, two noses and two mouths. And while The Guardian reports she "meows loudly from both mouths," we've seen only one mouth do the meowing. Maybe that's the sassy half and the other side is shy. That's one of a million questions we have.

Here's where the story could get sad. Seriously, stop reading now if you want to just enjoy a nice story about an adorable kitten that has two adorable faces and is living a pretty adorable life so far.

Deucy has been rejected by her mother. She is an orphan, basically.

How are you feeling now? How did you handle that information? Because that was just a test. That's not even the potentially saddest part of this story. Seriously, it's going to get dark. Could you handle the orphan stuff? If not, stop reading. Seriously.

You've been warned:

Janus cats often die quickly after birth, due to internal complications. A black two-faced cat named Harvey Dent (finally! A worthy name!) was born in 2012 and died days later. Another two-faced kitten, Gemini, did the same. As we're mere days out from Deucy's birth, why don't we all just send the kitten some extra good thoughts and love anyway?

But the Guinness Book of World Records has seen a Janus cat, Frankenlouie, live to be 12! And Durkee reports that Deucy's vet says, on the whole, the kitten is perfectly healthy. So watch out, Frankenlouie, because Deucy may not play the piano. And Deucy may not have a generally poor disposition. But she's going to be a star.

UPDATE 4:15p.m. PT: Sadly, Deucy has died, according to Portland's KGW. Durkee claims the kitten went "peacefully." Deucy had quite the short life, not just because she was a viral sensation, but because she brought some joy and a dose of adorableness to everyone who followed her story along the way.
