Oscars 2014: Ricky Gervais Says Hosting Gig Would Be a "Thrill and an Honor"

Three-time Golden Globe host Ricky Gervais may be upping his award show ante.

The 51-year-old comedian said he would consider hosting the 2014 Oscars, but only if the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave him free reign over the live broadcast. 

"I doubt the job offer would come without some strings attached," the funnyman told GoldDerby.com editor Tom O'Neil when questioned about the highly-coveted hosting gig. "The worst string being, handing in my credentials as a comedian in favor of a family entertainer."

Last year, Seth MacFarlane hosted the Oscars and has frankly said he won't to return for round two. Gervais also ditched his recurring Golden Globes gig last year, and the show saw Amy Poehler and Tina Fey take over, earning rave reviews.

"We have to be able to poke fun at society without favoring any part of it because we are beholden to someone," Gervais said. "And it's a fine line between feeling like you've sold your soul and feeling like you're ruining someone's party. It would be very temping though, I must admit."

He also said he would be "incredibly flattered" if he were asked to host the legendary broadcast. "It would be a thrill and an honor," he added.

After his 2012 stint at the Golden Globes, Gervais said he never wanted to "be pursuaded to do it again."

"It's like a parachute jump," he admitted. "You can only really enjoy it in retrospect when you realize you didn't die and it was quite an amazing thing to do."
