The old saying 'never judge a book by its cover' certainly doesn't apply to the world of magazines.

Scan any newsstand, and you'll find glossy covers plastered with top talent including celebrities, models, reality stars, musicians and more, making for an interesting selection when it comes to enticing readers to pick their favorites to take home.

So which stars perform the best? It's not who you'd think!

According to an article in the New York Times, the rise of reality and television stars like Zooey Deschanel and Lauren Conrad trumps A-list film stars thanks to their relatability and fan base, and certainly proving to magazine editors that the tables have turned.

"There was a day when movie stars were the gold standard for magazines," Jess Cagle of Entertainment Weekly says in the article. "But movie stars are less revered than they used to be, and also audiences have shifted their allegiance in large part to television."

That—coupled with the oh-so-important social media interaction between fans and their fave celebs (Miley Cyrus' March Cosmopolitan cover inspired hashtag #BuyMileysCosmo with so much as a click of a button)—have really added a new dimension to one's star power and rank in the editorial world.

Looks like the times they are a-changin'!
