It apparently wasn't love at first sight when Nicole Richie met her future husband, Joel Madden.
"When I first would see her around, we were friends," the Good Charlotte frontman told Australia's 60 Minutes in an interview airing Sunday. "But I don't think I'm the obvious choice. I'm always like, 'Just give me a shot. Just give me one date.' If I can get my foot in the door..."
In a preview clip for the show, even his father-in-law Lionel Richie cracked that Madden "was not Prince Charming, believe you me."
But two kids and a vow swap later...
"I'm not for every woman, you know," Madden said. "Because a lot of women...I mean, obviously, your first thing is, 'What do you want your guy to look like?' And I'm not the tall, dark, handsome guy, But I think, once you get to know me—like how I got Nicole."
Consider Madden's time-biding strategy a success: The couple have been together for more than six years and celebrated their second wedding anniversary in December.
