It's definitely baseball season.

The weekend box office proved that people love watching movies about the All-American sport as much as they love watching the actual games.

Jackie Robinson's biopic 42: The True Story of an American Legend topped the box office, bringing in $27.3 million opening weekend.

The film by writer-director Brian Helgeland (who wrote the screenplay for L.A. Confidential) focuses on the years 1945 to 1947 when Robinson went from the Negro Leagues to the Majors. Robinson was the first African-American to break the baseball color barrier when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. Chadwick Boseman plays the famous ballplayer, with Harrison Ford costarring as Brooklyn's general manager Branch Rickey.

Shifting from the sublime to the silly, Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen's Scary Movie 5 came in at No. 2 with $15.2, while DreamWorks Animations' The Croods stayed strong in its fourth weekend by ranking third for the weekend with $13.2 million.
