American Idol Elimination: Is It an All-Girl Race at Last?

American Idol Top 6 Michael Becker / FOX

Lazaro Arbos was written off by all four judges last night on American Idol.

All of them (even Mariah Carey) agreed to one extent or another that, even on his best day—which Wednesday certainly wasn't—he just couldn't compare to the five remaining girls.

But did America agree and give up voting for the endearing crooner? For weeks now, über-producer Jimmy Iovine has picked Lazaro as the doomed contestant, but...every week, he's been wrong.

Well, first Ryan Seacrest had to shuffle Lazaro, Angie Miller and Kree Harrison—last week's top three—off to the side, where they had to sit through a performance by Scotty McCreery, who dazzled the tweens with "Gotta See You Tonight."

Then the final six had to wait in pairs—Lazaro and Amber Holcomb, Kree and Candice Glover, Angie and Janelle Arthur—for Kelly Clarkson to rock out to "People Like Us."

Of course, people like her don't come along on Idol every season, let alone every day—but is a girl finally going to win this year after a five-season drought?

It's a given.

Amber ended up in the bottom two as well, but it was neither a new dawn nor a new day for the struggling Lazaro, who chose "Feelin' Good" for his swan song.

The judges' save remains on the table—and in a few weeks Idol is going to have its first female winner since Jordin Sparks!
