The Academy Award-winning actor stopped by HuffPost Live yesterday where he was asked about the fights to legalize same-sex marriage, both here in the U.S. and in his native U.K.
"It seems to me now that they are fighting for the name, and I worry that means somehow we debase or we change what marriage is," Irons said. "I just worry about that."
The Borgias star went on to ponder the tax implications of legalizing gay marriage, specifically the passing of property and inheritance.
"Could a father not marry his son?" Irons asked host Josh Zepps, who answered, "There are laws against incest."
"It's not incest between men," Irons said. "Incest is there to protect us from having inbreeding, but men don't breed, so incest wouldn't cover that."
"I don't have a strong feeling either way," Irons later clarified. "I just wish everybody who's living with one other person the best of luck in the world, because it's fantastic.
"Living with another animal, whether it be a husband or a dog, is great," he said. "It's lovely to have someone to love. I don't think sex matters at all. What it's called doesn't matter at all."
This isn't the first time Irons has put his foot in his mouth. While promoting his PBS show Uncovering Shakespeare earlier this year, he dissed Downton Abbey, saying "If you think that's good, then watch the Shakespeare productions. You'll see what real writing, what real stories, what real characters are about."
