If Ryan Gosling has a lot to do penance for, we wouldn't know it by this preview.
A red band trailer for the Hollywood hunk's latest thriller, Only God Forgives, is now in the wild and finds Gosling reuniting with his Drive director, Nicolas Winding Refn, for another neo-noir—this one set in the criminal underworld of Bangkok.
Gosling plays Julian, a British gangster who runs a Muay Thai boxing operation in the Southeast Asian metropolis that's really a front for his family's drug-smuggling operation.
The moody teaser begins with the voice of Julian's mother, Jenna (Kristin Scott Thomas), talking about how "different" and "strange" she knew her son to be when she was pregnant with him.
"They wanted me to terminate, but I wouldn't," she says.
The preview then cuts to Gosling karate-kicking a thug, then grabbing a baddie by the teeth and dragging him along a hallway. That kicks off a series of stylish, not to mention violent, shots including a brothel, a nightclub, a shootout at an outdoor restaurant and a baddie who stabs another guy in both hands and wields a sword. As counterpoint to the violence, the gentle music-box sounds of the Thai group Proud back the montage, a juxtaposition that would make John Woo, well, proud.
Word on the plot is that Julian's mother has tasked him with hunting down a Thai ex-cop and avenging his brother's death.
The film, which the Danish Winding Refn wrote, costars Tom Burke and Vithaya Pansringarm and hits theaters on July 19.
