2013 Oscars Sneak Peek: Backstage Green Room a Tribute to Wizard of Oz Art Director Cedric Gibbons

Architectural Digest has been designing the green room at the Academy Awards for 11 consecutive years—with each year's room featuring a very specific style created by a different designer.

This year, the mag selected interior designer Madeline Stuart to stage the space where all the evening's presenters and honorees can retreat to grab a drink, a snack or just kick back.

Fortunately, Madeline is no stranger to the Hollywood scene. In addition to having her own celebrity clientele, her father is the late Mel Stuart, an award-winning documentary filmmaker who also directed Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

Margaret Russell, editor-in-chief of Architectural Digest, discussed why Madeline was the perfect pick for this project. "Madeline's elegant, sophisticated taste and confident approach to modern interiors made her the perfect choice to create the Greenroom on behalf of Architectural Digest," she said in a prepared statement. "I'm sure her vision for the space will be beautifully realized, and the results will be inviting and deeply glamorous."

The inspiration for this year's green room is legendary art director Cedric Gibbons. The late Hollywood legend retired with nearly 1,500 films to his credit, including: Pride and Prejudice, The Wizard of Oz, Romeo and Juliet and Little Women.

In addition to his impressive resume, Gibbons is also one of the original 36 founding members of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and is credtied with creating the Oscar statuette.

Madeline said her design "pays homage to his four decades of film designs. My goal was to design a space where contemporary stars wouldn't be surprised to bump into Cary Grant or Katharine Hepburn."

As the official rendering shows, the room will feature modern furniture, stepped walls and ceilings, built-in upholstered banquettes and polished black floor—each being a nod to an element of Gibbons' signature art-deco style.

Madeline will be joining a list of previous green room decorators, which includes Stephen Shadley, Waldo Fernandez and Roger Thomas.
