The Following Premiere Ratings: Promising Start for Kevin Bacon Serial-Killer Drama

THE FOLLOWING Patrick Ecclesine/FOX

Looks like The Following may be on its way to developing one of its own.

In its premiere Monday night, Fox's high-profile new drama starring Kevin Bacon drew a solid 10.4 million viewers and a 3.1 rating among adults 18-49.

That was enough to make the Kevin Williamson-created series—which finds Bacon going up against a charismatic serial killer (James Purefoy) and his devoted acolytes—tie CBS's Elementary as the second highest-rated drama series premiere of the season. (NBC's Revolution is still tops.)

The Following, which was generally well-received by critics even as some wondered if the dark drama were too violent for network TV, easily outperformed the debut of its timeslot predecessor, The Mob Doctor, which was DOA last fall with just 5.1 million viewers. Together with its Bones lead-in, which posted a season high in total viewers, The Following helped Fox garner its highest-rated Monday night with scripted programming in a year.

The news was less promising for two other new Monday entries: NBC's Revenge-esque soap Deception dropped 19 percent from last week, while The CW's Sex and the City prequel, The Carrie Diaries, dropped 17 percent from the previous week's surprisingly low premiere.
