To kick off his second term as POTUS, President Barack Obama took the oath of office on the steps of the nation's Capitol in Washington, D.C., on Martin Luther King Day.

The star-studded historic event featured performances from Beyoncé, Kelly Clarkson and James Taylor and touching words from the likes of civil rights activist Myrlie Evers and the president himself.

So, what were the big moments from the president's inauguration? And which stars braved the chilly weather to see it?

• President Obama's Speech: With more than 700,000 people in attendance, according to the Chicago Tribune, the president called for national unity in his speech, saying the nation must come together to meet the country's challenges. "We are made for this moment, and we will seize it—so long as we seize it together," Obama said.

"We recall that what binds this nation together is not the colors of our skin or the tenets of our faith or the origins of our names," Obama went on to say. "What makes us exceptional—what makes us American—is our allegiance to an idea, articulated in a declaration made more than two centuries ago: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

• Fashionable FLOTUS: As we suspected, Michelle Obama did not disappoint as she stepped on stage wearing a chic Thom Browne outfit, J.Crew shoes and sporting flawless hair and lovely lashes. Her daughters, Sasha and Malia, also looked chic, wearing Kate Spade and J. Crew, respectively.

• The Performances: James Taylor strummed a guitar singing "America the Beautiful" and Kelly Clarkson belted out a powerful rendition of "My Country, ‘Tis of Thee," accompanied by the United States Marine Band. Beyoncé looked stunning, rounding out the performances, bringing down the house singing the National Anthem. Beyoncé, whose performance was saved for the end of the inaugural event (sparking a "Where's Beyoncé" Twitter trend), looked amazing in a stunning black dress.

• Star (Couple) Appearances: John Mayer and Katy Perry were spotted attending the inauguration together, as was engaged couple John Legend and Chrissy Teigen. Jay-Z was also spotted walking his stunning wife Beyoncé through the crowd, and Eva Longoria was in attendance as well.

• Touching Moments: Myrlie Evers-Williams, civil rights activist and wife of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers, became the first woman to ever deliver the invocation at an inauguration, according to People. "150 years after the Emancipation Proclamation and 50 years after the march on Washington, we celebrate the spirit of our ancestors," Evers-Williams said during the invocation.

Richard Blanco's Poem: Miami-raised poet Richard Blanco took the stage, paying homage to his experiences in America. Unfortunately, the Twitterverse didn't seem too impressed by Blanco's words, with a "Where's Maya Angelou?" trend popping up while he was speaking.

Near Slip-Up: Chief Justice John G. Roberts swore in Barack Obama for the second time, and while it looked like he almost tripped him up again while giving him the presidential oath, the president quickly recovered, finishing it up with ease. Whew!
