Not even the highly anticipated releases of Django Unchained and Les Miserables could knock The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey from the top of the box office.

While the controversial slavery flick and the Hugh Jackman-Anne Hathaway starring musical garnered record-breaking box office numbers on their Christmas Day openings, Peter Jackson's fantasy film still reigned supreme.

The Hobbit continued to dominate for the third weekend in a row with an estimated $32.9 million Friday-Sunday take, upping its domestic total to a whopping $222.7 million.

While Django Unchained and Les Miserables didn't win the box office, both fared well, raking in $30.7 million and $28 million, respectively.

Parental Guidance landed in a higher-than-expected fourth-place spot, taking home $14.8 million and topping Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher, which still hasn't pulled in numbers that would indicate that a $100 million gross is within its reach, according to Indiewire.com

After the smallest-ever debut for a Judd Apatow-directed comedy, This Is 40, the quasi-sequel to Knocked Up, raked in $13.2 million, giving it only a gross of $37.1 million.

Meanwhile, Skyfall, which garnered $4.6 million domestically this weekend reached a huge milestone, surpassing $1 billion at the worldwide box office, according to Thewrap.com.

Overall, the box office remained strong, completing a very successful and record-breaking year for ticket sales, according to the Hollywood Reporter, with total yearly revenues expected to reach $10.8 billion by Monday.
