You can always count on the ex-Prince to keep up the daily weirdness quota.

The pop oddity has just announced that he's anulling his three-year marriage to Mayte Garcia because he does not believe in any "contract held by social conventions."

Contracts "are made by man to guarantee the possibility of divorce," the Purple One announced during a press conference Friday in Madrid, where he's touring.

"Mayte and I are joined for life, and the best way to demonstrate it is to do away with the legal bonds that people demand," he added.

So instead of the "I do" thing, the Artist Formerly Known as Married says he and Mayte plan to be rejoined in what he calls a "symbolic" ceremony set for Valentine's Day 1999 in Spain. (He and Mayte originally got hitched on Cupid Day '96 in Minneapolis.)

"Conventional marriage ceremonies are totally counter to our beliefs."

During their now-defunct union, the Artist and Mayte had a son who died soon after birth of a rare bone disorder.

Of course, the Artist has never been big on contracts. He had a big blow-up with his former record company, Warner Bros., and now has his own label, NPG, which he says doesn't use contracts. In fact, he is so peeved at his former label that he is rerecording his 1982 smash 1999 and encouraging fans to buy the new version, not Warners' competing rerelease.
