Drew Barrymore's Nutritionist Shares 3 Tips for a Healthier 2013

Losing weight is one of the most common New Year's resolutions—and while many of us desperately want to stick to this promise, it's much easier said than done (See: "losing weight" tops the list of most commonly broken New Year's resolutions).

So, if at first you don't succeed…enlist the help of a professional!

We spoke to celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder who has helped everyone from Fergie, Channing Tatum and Drew Barrymore manage their meal plans and she gave us three tips to help make that New Year's weight-loss resolution a reality.

Kimberly Snyder's detox diet

Here's what she had to say:

Start With Salad: Kimberly recommends starting every dinner with a large green salad. She says it will not only help your body digest the heavier foods that you will be eating afterward, but it will also help fill you up and allow you to exercise portion control. Kim cautions that salads can cross the line and become unhealthy, though. "I don't mean a salad full of croutons and meat," she says. "Keep it salad based…completely plant-based."

Use Fruit Wisely: While many of us have been told that fruit is a great dessert option, Kimberly disagrees with this theory and says to only eat it on an empty stomach. She also tells all of her clients to add the juice of two lemons to their diets every day. She says the citric acid enzymes help support your liver, which is your main fat-burning organ. And as an extra benefit, lemon is also full of vitamin C, which repairs the collagen in your skin.

And last, but not least…

Go Green—With Onions: Kimberly says the average adult can hold up to 10 pounds of water weight! So a great way to beat the bloat is to add flavor to your foods with green onions instead of salt. She says they are an organic source of sodium, so your body can digest it better and the potassium can help counter the unwanted effects.

Kimberly also warns against going on extreme diets. Instead, she stresses making changes that are part of an overall healthier lifestyle.
