Either Russell Crowe had a little too close a shave while ridding himself of the beard he was sporting for his biblical epic, Noah, or he's preparing for his next role.

In this case, it's the latter.

The erstwhile Gladiator was snapped made up with a nasty scar on the set of his latest flick, Winter's Tale, which started filming in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, N.Y., on Monday (an area, by the way, hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, which prompted Noah to temporarily shut down production).

In the fantasy film, which is the directorial debut of Akiva Goldsman, the Oscar-winning scribe behind Crowe's A Beautiful Mind, the 48-year-old thesp plays a gangster named Pearly Soames in a story set in 19th-century and present-day Manhattan and revolving around a thief, a dying girl and a flying white horse. Winter's Tale costars Will Smith, Jennifer Connelly, Colin Farrell and Downton Abbey's Jessica Brown Findlay.

Crowe next returns to theaters as Inspector Javert in the big-screen musical adaptation of Les Misérables unspooling on Christmas Day.
