If Anne Hathaway had any hesitation when it came to chopping off her locks to play Fantine in Les Misérables, at least she found some comfort when she actually checked out her new 'do.

"When I eventually looked in the mirror I just thought I looked like my gay brother," the actress said during a New York City screening of the Tom Hooper-directed movie musical on Friday, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

And it seems the drastic change is starting to pay off, as both Hathaway and the film itself are already receiving rave reviews from critics who were in attendance.

See why Anne Hathaway is a true movie star

    • "Hathaway...is probably now the frontrunner in the best supporting actress category," wrote the Hollywood Reporter's Scott Feinberg of the 30-year-old's Oscar chances. "As Fantine her screen time is brief, but she makes an indelible impression, particularly during the showstopping 'I Dreamed a Dream' number."
    • "Hathaway wins. GOD. I wept. Film's a triumph. They're on their feet here. NYC crowd ate...it...up," tweeted Kristopher Tapley of HitFlix.
    • "Les Miserables is an absolute masterpiece, a triumph in cinema. It will win Best Picture and Oscars for Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway," noted Julie Stone of Newsweek.
    • "This now becomes the Titanic of this year's awards season, the epic to beat," claimed Showbiz 411's Roger Friedman.
