Ben Affleck's Argo was the No. 1 movie at the box office: True or false?

Yes.

While the three-week-old thriller led a weak lineup in the United States and Canada with a $12.3 million take, James Bond's Skyfall grossed a whopping $77.7 million overseas.

As BoxOfficeGuru's Gitesh Pandya put it in a tweet, the 007 adventure was the weekend's "#1 pic on Earth."

Indeed, Skyfall's studio reported that the Daniel Craig film was the top grosser in all 25 countries it opened.

The British-born series played best in the United Kingdom, of course, where it scored $32.4 million.

The gross was the U.K.'s biggest of year, per Sony, and its second-biggest of all time.

Other top countries: France ($9.1 million), Russia ($8.6 million) and Brazil ($6.5 million).

In nearly all of the markets, Skyfall got off to a faster start than either of the previous two Craig Bond films, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.

Skyfall is the first Bond in four years, a longer-than-usual break for the 50-year-old franchise.

North American moviegoers must wait another couple of weeks for the film: Skyfall doesn't open here until Nov. 9.
