Ben Affleck had a love-hate relationship while making Argo...with his beard!
"Sometimes it looked cool like Kurt Russell in one those early '80s movies, but sometimes I looked like Barry Gibb," the Oscar winner told us at the premiere of the film, which he not only stars in, but also directed.
"The hair and the beard were no joke. There were definitely some mornings when I thought, 'Can't Tony just get a haircut?'"
Tony is Tony Mendez, a CIA specialist who helped free six Americans hiding in the Canadian ambassador's home in Iran in 1979 by pretending to film a sci-fi movie in the Middle East country.
George Clooney is a producer on the film. "I didn't know the story until a couple of years ago when I got the script from George," Affleck said. Usually, I struggle and fret, but I knew right away I wanted to do this."
And the quick decision seems to have paid off. The movie (in theaters on Oct. 12) has been getting all sorts of award season buzz.
"He is one of the most gifted directors I have ever worked with," said Bryan Cranston, the Breaking Bad star who plays CIA manager Jack O'Donnell in Argo.
John Goodman, who plays legendary makeup artist John Chambers, agreed.
"He's the best," Goodman gushed. "He's incredible. He's a great storyteller. I'd work with him again in a heartbeat."
