Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli and Aretha Franklin were among the performers who took the microphone at a memorial for the late composer at the 900-seat Juilliard School theater.
"He was one of my few constants," an emotional Minnelli, who sang "If You Really Knew Me" from the musical They're Playing My Song, told the crowd. "He was always there. He always was and always will be."
Franklin did a slow burn on "Nobody Does It Better," the theme song from the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me. Streisand, who recalled first meeting Hamlisch as the rehearsal pianist when she was doing Funny Girl on Broadway in 1964, sang the Oscar-winning title song from The Way We Were.
Violinist Itzhak Perlman, singer Michael Feinstein, trumpeter Chris Botti and theater star Maria Friedman also performed.
Hamlisch—one of only two people with an Oscar (three, actually), Grammy, Tony, Emmy (three again) and Pulitzer Prize under his belt, not to mention two Golden Globes—died after a brief illness on Aug. 6. He was 69 and had been working on yet another new musical.
