Did the Flying Tomato go a little overboard with the sauce?
Shaun White has been charged with misdemeanor vandalism and public intoxication stemming from his alleged behavior at a Nashville hotel over the weekend.
According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, the snowboarding icon is said to have pulled a fire alarm shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel, resulting in all of the guests being evacuated, and was then witnessed destroying a hotel phone.
White then tried to leave in a cab but a fellow citizen prevented the driver from leaving, saying he was calling police on the two-time Olympic gold medalist.
According to authorities, White kicked the man after overhearing his conversation with the cab driver and took off on foot. Or, at least he tried to.
The man who wanted to call the cops later told police that he chased after White, who at some point turned around, ran into his pursuer and fell back against a fence, banging his head hard enough that he was then transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The mug shot provided by the police department shows a bit of a shiner under White's left eye.
Responding officers reported that White "appeared to be extremely intoxicated and smelled strongly of alcohol," according to the police press release, which also noted that arrest warrants charging the athlete with vandalism and public intoxication were issued after he refused to sign misdemeanor citations.
White was released from the hospital this afternoon and is free on his own recognizance, police say.
A rep for the fiery-haired snowboarder hasn't yet returned a request for comment. As for the hotel, a Loews rep said that they are "committed to ensuring guest safety and confidentiality at all times. As this incident is a police matter, we are deferring all comments to the police."
