RoboCop is getting a makeover.

The first set photo from the upcoming remake has surfaced. By the looks of the black, skin-tight, futuristic metal suit inhabited by star Joel Kinnaman, our crime-fighting cyborg is definitely new. However, the verdict is still out on whether he's improved, at least among the fanboy set, many of whom have compared him to Batman.

Perhaps that's because RoboCop's new getup looks strikingly similar to some other big screen heroes—the Dark Knight and Iron Man specifically come to mind. And that hasn't gone unnoticed by fans, some of whom have criticized director José Padilha for running with what they felt was a derivative design and messing with a cinematic icon.

"It looks like they took the newest Bat suit, ditched the cape, slapped on the helmet from the G.I. Joe movie, and called it RoboCop," wrote one commenter on ComingSoon.net.

"Changing RoboCop's suit is like getting rid of Jason's hockey mask or Freddy Krueger's whole getup. It just doesn't feel right. People, even non-nerds, know what RoboCop looks like, so why change that when you're attempting to cash in on the familiar?" opined Film School Rejects

We can't wait to see what they're going do to ED-209.

Robocop features The Killing actor slipping into the role first made famous by Peter Weller in Paul Verhoeven's bloody 1987 original—that of officer Alex Murphy who, shot dead by gangsters in a crime-infested Detroit in 2028, is resurrected as a gun-toting robotic gunslinger. The redo, which is being targeted for a PG-13 rating, costars Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, and Jackie Earle Haley and  is now filming in Toronto. The film is set to hit theaters August 2013.
