Our long national nightmare is over: One Direction's Zayn Malik has rejoined Twitter.

Exhale, everyone. The longest 36 hours of our lives has passed.

"Sorry, I was getting some abuse on twitter but I dont want to let my fans down," Malik tweeted in his triumphant return to the social media site this morning. "So I am back!! :) x"

We'd say let the celebrations begin, but it seems they already have, as Zayn was immediately inundated with welcome-back messages from his fans after having abruptly announced his departure from Twitter on Tuesday.

"The reason i don't tweet as much as i use to, is because I'm sick of all the useless opinions and hate that i get daily goodbye twitter :)" the pop star wrote at the time. Well, what a difference a day (and a bit) makes.

"And thanks for all your messages of support," he wrote this morning after retweeting some of the more effusive welcome-back messages he received. "I really do love all you guys, your support never ceases 2 amaze me xxx"

And just in case his return to the site wasn't exciting enough, he also offered up this tease for his fans: "Can't wait to share our big news with you :) x"

UPDATE: Fans didn't have to wait long. One Direction announced this morning that "Live While We're Young," the debut single from their second album due in November, will be available for preorder tonight ahead of its Oct. 1 premiere. But don't take our word for it...
