Bandleader chic notwithstanding, we're proud of our style icon Madonna, who turns 54 today.

When it comes to fashion, her 53rd year was filled with the unexpected, the sexy and the sophisticated—essentially, the hallmarks she's been known for since she broke big in the 1980s. (We're skipping over our memories of the early '90s, which Madonna essentially spent naked.)

Over the past 365 days, designers were as eager as ever to dress the pop legend—for the premiere of her film, W.E., at the Venice Film Festival, the singer-director wore a butterfly-dotted Vionnet gown created just for her.

When she triumphed over Elton John at the Golden Globes, winning an award for Best Original Song, Madge chose a plunging, perfectly fitted Reem Acra with a statement cross necklace.

That wasn't the first time in recent history that the Material Girl wore a whole lotta dress. We loved the sheer black Marchesa gown with zeppelin-sized ruffles she sported for the New York W.E. premiere.

As for that bandleader costume she's been wearing for her tour—well, every moment can't be golden. We just have to hope that Madonna's 54th year of style will be as (nearly) perfect as this last one was.
