We're not big on vocabulary lessons here at Fashion Police, probably because we already know the difference between voile and tulle, and you darned better know it too if you expect to hang with us.
But every once in a while it helps to revisit what the hell a peplum is, especially since all of Hollywood has apparently rediscovered the fashion staple.
Exhibit A: this Stella McCartney dress, complete with a peplum for which both Kim Kardashian and Dianna Agron are ready to go to war.
The center of this fashion feud? That overskirt between the bodice and the hem? That's a peplum, and lately we've been seeing them on everybody—from Lady Gaga to Anna Faris and Anne Hathaway to Rooney Mara.
The Glee actress wore her McCartney peplum with a simple black platform pump for a visit to the Ed Sullivan Theater last year, while Kanye West's gal sported the same dress with a set of statement cuffs and ankle strap shoes when she went to see The Book of Mormon in New York City over the weekend.
