Because on the opening weekend of the London 2012 Olympics, Team GB's football soccer team not only had the eyes of the nation on them, they also had the eyes of the nation's future crown-wearer and chief torchbearer.
Brit bromancers David Beckham and Prince William made for quite the pretty picture (OK, one slightly prettier than the other) when they teamed up in the stands of Wembley Stadium yesterday to cheer on the England squad in their first match of the summer games.
Joining the chaps in the cheer section was Becks' son Romeo, and it seems to have done the trick (of course, the years of tireless training on behalf of the squad also might've had a little something to do with it) as the team defeated their competition, the United Arab Emirates, 3-1.
There were clearly no hard feelings for the 37-year-old Beckham, who missed out on a spot on the squad earlier this summer. But he may have had the last laugh, as he had the honor during Friday night's opening ceremonies of driving the Olympic torch down the Thames in a speedboat toward Olympic Stadium, and, in keeping with Danny Boyle's record-breaking theme, seemed to singlehandedly turn the whole of the female viewership into Victorian heroines.
In other words, there was some swooning going on.
