The parents of stuntman Kun Liu, who was killed while working on The Expendables 2, filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday.

Producers Nu Image and Millennium Films, along with the movie's stunt coordinator, were named in the suit, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Liu was killed last October in Bulgaria as a boating sequence was being shot on Lake Ognyanovo, just outside the capital of Sofia, for the action-packed sequel. Another stuntman also sustained injuries.

The defendants "recklessly organized, planned, set up, produced, trained, coordinated and otherwise prepared for and implemented the stunt which involved the use of explosives and other similar ultra-hazardous activities in the rubber boat so as to cause an explosion, thereby injuring [Liu] and causing his death," alleges the lawsuit obtained by the trade paper.

At the time of the mishap, the producers released a statement to E! News regarding the tragic event.

"It is with great regret that we confirm this unfortunate accident," it read. "Our hearts go out to the families and those on the production affected by this tragedy. The filmmakers are working closely with the authorities in responding to and investigating the accident."

Expendables 2, directed by Simon West and starring the likes of such action legends as Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Jean-Claude Van Damme, is scheduled to open in theaters Aug. 17.
