Here's hoping Batman fans went to bed early on Thursday night and didn't tune into the Late Show.

While chatting with Anne Hathaway about her upcoming movie, The Dark Knight Rises, David Letterman may have spilled the beans on the ending of one of the summer's most highly anticipated flicks.

Or not.

After pointing out that it's not necessary for people to have seen the previous Caped Crusader movies to appreciate this latest installment, Letterman proceeded to drop this potential bombshell.

"And in the end, Batman is dead," he quipped.

A smiling Hathaway playfully admonished the host with a "Dave!" as they both laughed at the possible faux pas.

"No, he's not dead," Letterman then told the audience. "He ain't dead, just relax, will you?"

"I just want you to know the wrath you just invited onto yourself," Hathaway pointed out before turning to the camera to inform the movie's director, Christopher Nolan, "I had no part in it, I'm sorry."

Guess we'll just have to see for ourselves what the ending really is when the movie hits theaters on July 20.
