Let's get this out of the way immediately: We loathe mermaid dresses.
Loathe them with the passion of a thousand fiery-yellow embroidered suns blazing out from the lapels of Elton John's favorite Willy Wonka blazer.
But then we saw this photo of Naomi Watts attending the White Tie and Tiara Ball charity fundraiser in Windsor, England, and our faith in overly precious princess dresses was thus restored...
Don't get us twisted: This is a big Marchesa gown with huge features, including gold-embroidered crane detailing in the bodice and a seriously fairy-tale skirt in tulle—a combo more evocative of prom or the Oscars than easy summer elegance.
But then again, this was an event called the White Tie and Tiara Ball—what else could we expect other than a formal ball gown, one paired with champagne-colored sandals at that?
Conclusion: Watts pulls off this fussy frock, but do not attempt to tame it at home.
