Of course, we're talking about Silver (Jessica Stroup) and Liam (Matt Lanter), who were both already part of two of the CW soap's fan-favorite couples when they grew closer and finally hooked up, shocking viewers in the process. While Liam's relationship with Annie (Shenae Grimes) has been put on the backburner, Silver has found herself in the middle of a love triangle involving Liam and longtime boyfriend Navid (Michael Steger), who will confront his BFF and GF about their hookup in tonight's episode.
We chatted with Lanter about where the love triangle is heading, if he was shocked by the Silver and Liam pairing and if there's any hope for a Liam and Annie reunion!
This being 90210, Navid decides to confront Liam about hooking up with Silver on a red carpet! "Of course it's on a grand scale. It's not just a fight in a hotel room, or a parking lot or a bar, it's a fight on a red carpet when everyone is in suits and dresses and there's hundred of people and cameras," Lanter says with a laugh. "It's like there is no denying this fight to anyone or playing it down because everyone got to see it. Navid planned this and called Liam out. Liam's not really feeling like he's done anything wrong though. "
Complicating the situation is Silver's health problems, namely the big "C." "The situation has so much more weight to it because of what is going on personally with her and the cancer gene and being like, 'How does this affect the rest of my life? Do I need to have a baby right now'?" Lanter says. "So there are so many things going on with her and it's a really complicated situation."
Lanter admits both he and Stroup were initially shocked when they found out their characters would be hooking up on the CW soap, saying, "Silver and Liam haven't really conversed that much over the past four years, so it was kind of interesting to see that happen. We were all excited about it. It's fun to have a new love interest, especially with someone who you've known for years and never got the chance for your characters to be together."
Lanter tells us The Vampire Diaries' Elena and Gossip Girl's Blair aren't the only two CW girls making a big romantic decision in their respective shows' finales.
"In the season finale the love triangle between Liam and Silver and Navid kind of comes to a head and you kind of just see Liam lay it all out there on the line," he teases. "You're going to see her make the ultimate decision and I think it's going to surprise everybody what her decision is. It's such a life-altering decision for her and possibly for the boys, too. But I think it's kind of out of left field a little bit, which is fun."
Still, Lanter stresses that fans of Liam and Annie together shouldn't lose hope. "I think there always is hope because this is what young people do: they go off and they find other people and they think the grass is greener on the other side, but Liam and Annie had a pretty solid connection too," he explains. "So when you have that you can always come back to each other. I would never put that out of possibly happening."
90210 airs tonight at 8 p.m. on the CW.
