It was a Dog Day Afternoon—and indeed we presume a not-so happy birthday for Al Pacino.

The acting legend, who turns 72 today, injured his left eye on Monday during shooting of a gunfight scene in Los Angeles with costar Christopher Walken for their upcoming action comedy, Stand Up Guys.

Pacino—decked out in a three-piece pinstripe suit and looking quite dapper with a gray goatee—drew back in pain and on-set medics treated him immediately.

The Oscar winner's rep tells E! News that Pacino, who was not actually involved in the scene that was shooting, was struck in the eye by some unkown foreign object. It was immediately flushed out and he continued working. Contrary to some early reports, Pacino never left the set.

The flick, originally titled Old Timers and directed by Fisher Stevens, chronicles two aging con men who get the gang back together for one last job before one of them is tasked with one final assigment—to kill his comrade. It hits theaters next year.
