Let the record show: Ryan Kwanten and Joe Manganiello are truly fine actors who churn out excellent work on True Blood. And not to take anything away from that, but when the pair hit a red carpet together, as they did at last night's star-studded HBO Golden Globes party, the press line gets a bit...giddy. It can't be helped. It's not our fault. I mean, have you seen them?
Poor Zooey Deschanel has to hook up with Ryan on New Girl (tragic!), and Kwanten gave us the scoop on that, plus what's ahead for True Blood's "out of the box" season five. Plus, if accidentally doing a nude scene in front of a school bus filled with children sounds like something you should go to prison for, um, break out the handcuffs...
It's part of the reason we fans love True Blood so: Alan Ball and his team always find new ways to surprise and amuse!
At last night's red-hot HBO party, Kwanten told me of season five: "This is going to be a very sort of out-of-the-box season. If we broke down the wall before, now we are firmly on the other side. I think you can always expect the unexpected with us."
What else you can expect? Not a lot of clothing. "It's True Blood," teases Manganiello. "We aren't allowed to!"
Manganiello also reveals that a recent nude scene (he plays werewolf Alcide) went unexpectedly awry: "We were shooting a transformation scene in broad daylight and there was a hedge and over the hedge was a school bus filled with kids." Whoops. Though he clearly wished that mistake hadn't happened, he pauses and jokes, "Listen, you're not having fun unless it's something you can get thrown in prison for."
Manganiello also confirms that there will be lots of werewolves on TB's new season. "It is [the season of the werewolf] for me. There's a whole bunch of new werewolves to play with, we have like a whole werewolf section at the table reads. We have secret handshakes. When one of us go to the bathroom we all howl so they know where to come back to."
Must. Go. Visit.
Meanwhile, although Zooey Deschanel didn't win best actress in a comedy (robbed!), she did win some screen time with Kwanten. "That was such a trip to play," Kwanten says of his New Girl guest spot, playing a love interest for Jess (Deschanel). "It is in the Valentine's Day episode. It was an honor to be picked for that. But if you see the episode you'll see it's not really an honor. The character I play, he seems good on paper but he's not really so."
HBO's Globes party was jam-packed with celebs last night, including the entire Modern Family cast, Glee stars, Paris Hilton, John Stamos, the awesomeness that is Game of Thrones, winners Laura Dern and Peter Dinklage and more. Kwanten himself even got a bit starstruck in the middle of our interview.
"How are you, man?" he shouted toward someone off camera before returning to the interview. "I just got a shout out from Michael Fassbender. Nice!"
