Akon: Latest Fan Flap Was "Little Accident"

Rapper insists he didn't intentionally smack female fan as captured in new video footage

It seems the "Smack That" singer, well, didn't. At least, not intentionally.

Last week's release of some incriminating fan footage—coupled with a less than stellar record of audience treatment—seemed to indicate that Akon had backhanded a young female fan during an Aug. 30 performance in Guyana, the rapper is lashing out at the allegations, denying any mistreatment.

"Everything was great, that was a little accident," he tells E! News of the incident. "I don't even know why [the media] took it like that…she actually saved me from falling."

Luckily for Akon's reputation (not to mention future concert attendance), new footage of the incident seems to corroborate the rapper's story.

In the original video of the incident, a female concertgoer appears to be backhanded by the rapper after pulling him onto an elevated platform located deep in the South African crowd.

New footage, however, taken from a different angle, shows that while some unfortunate contact did occur between the rapper's hand and the fan's face, it was not intentional.

In the latter video, Akon is shown to have lost his footing while attempting to mount the platform and, in trying to maintain his balance, flails an arm in his fan's direction. The footage also continues to roll where the previous film left off, showing the rapper hugging and otherwise comforting the girl after realizing what happened.

And while the new video clearly absolves Akon of any deliberate star-on-fan violence—in this incident, anyway—it didn't stop the show's promoters from jumping to the performer's defense.

"We are shocked to hear that there is a video clip circulating that suggests Akon treated a fan badly during his Aug. 30 performance in Guyana," Hits & Jams Entertainment said in a statement shortly after the footage hit the Web.

"Despite a late start, the concert was a tremendous success, and we hope that Akon will come back soon."

Meanwhile, the rapper still faces charges of second-degree harassment and endangering the welfare of a minor stemming from an allegation that he threw a teenage fan off the stage during a summer festival in New York last year.

He pleaded not guilty to both charges and his trial kicks off Dec. 1. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of one year and 15 days in jail.
