Sometimes a single decision can change everything.

Or in Jennifer Hudson's case, be the difference between life and death.

The Dreamgirls star reveals to Ebony that she was originally supposed to be with her mother, brother and nephew on the day they were shot and killed in Oct. 2008.

But rather than go home to visit her family in Chicago, Hudson says she decided to see her fiancé, David Otunga, fight in a World Wrestling Entertainment match.

"He wanted me to come out to Florida with him instead of going to Chicago. I flew out to see him; that's why I'm still here," Hudson tells the magazine. "That's one of the things that saved my life. Because I could have been home with my mum then."

It's a sad realization that Hudson clearly has a hard time expressing.

"I've never said that before, and I can't believe I just said that now," she says. "But I didn't know."

William Balfour, the estranged husband of Hudson's sister Julia, has been charged with all three murders.
