If you believe the Twitterverse, it's not a question of whether Adele is ailing, but to what degree.

As everyone knows by now, the English songbird was forced to cancel the remainder of her tour and promotional appearances for 2011 so she can undergo throat surgery to fix a problem with her vocal chord.

Unfortunately, her announcement has done little to stem rumors spreading like wild fire on Twitter—including users trending #PrayforAdele—that the 23-year-old might be suffering from something worse than what her camp let on: namely throat cancer.

Well, E! News has done some digging and we can definitely say these reports are...

False!

According to Adele's publicist, rumors that she's been stricken with throat cancer are, in fact, just plain wrong.

"We would like to reiterate that Adele is to undergo surgery for a hemorrhaged vocal chord," the rep tells E!. "All reports regarding any other condition are 100 percent false."

While it's not life-threatening cancer by any means, the illness—caused by bleeding due to swelling of the vocal chords—is still serious in that it could jeopardize the songstress' beautiful singing voice and her career.

Per the Voice Care Center at Duke University, "a hemorrhage left untreated or occurring repeatedly may result in scarring of the vocal folds, which is a condition that is much harder to treat and has permanent effects on voice quality."

Earlier this month, Adele confirmed she was suffering as much on her blog, noting that her voice was "weakened by a bout of flu from December." The condition worsened until, by the time the "Chasing Pavements" chanteuse embarked on her U.S. tour in May, her "voice suddenly switched off like a light" and she felt as though there was "something ripping in my throat."

Despite scrapping more tour dates to try and rest, Adele's pipes were further weakened due to bouts of laryngitis. The Grammy winner subsequently ended up getting a second opinion and was diagnosed with the hemorrhage, necessitating the operation and what will surely be a lengthy recovery period.

"I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully, or I risk damaging my voice forever," wrote Adele in an apologetic post to fans. "Wanting to do something so bad and not being able to is the most frustrating thing as I'm sure you know! My voice is weak and I need to build it back up. I'm gonna be starting up vocal rehab and start building my over all stamina in my voice, body and mind."

Here's wishing her a speedy recovery.
