It hurts so good all right.
John Mellencamp's divorce from his estranged supermodel-wife, Elaine Irwin Mellencamp, became final last Friday.
But it's not so bad. After all, he is officially free to pursue Meg Ryan now.
The couple officially separated last September after 18 years of marriage. The "Jack and Diane" singer subsequently filed his divorce petition Jan. 14 and went public with the news that he was dating the When Harry Met Sally star a month later.
According to the confidential divorce settlement, details of which were first reported by People, the 59-year-old Mellencamp and 41-year-old Irwin will share legal custody of their two boys, 17-year-old Hud and 16-year-old Speck, though their catwalking-mom will retain primary physical custody.
Court papers state that the parties reached "an amicable settlement of all issues involving property and maintenance rights, the custody and support of their children, and all other issues."
That includes both Mellencamp and Irwin maintaining their residences in Indiana for the good of the kids (they share a 56-acre estate off the shores of Lake Monroe, not far from Bloomington) . No other details of the agreement were available.
Sad to say, this is the rocker's third marriage to come "crumblin' down."
Mellencamp has three daughters from two previous unions: daughter Michelle with first wife Priscilla Esterline, whom he divorced after two years of marriage in 1981, and Teddi Jo and Justice with Victoria Granucci, his wife from 1981 to 1989.
