Very sad news for music fans everywhere.
Gerard Smith, the bassist for TV on the Radio, died Wednesday morning after battling lung cancer, the band announced on its website, noting Smith's "courageous fight" against the disease. He was 36.
The Brooklyn-based rockers canceled their next five shows, including one scheduled for tonight in Detroit, in honor of their departed mate. "We will miss him terribly," they said.
Smith first joined TV on the Radio as an official member to play bass and keyboards on 2008's Dear Science. The eclectic group's new album, Nine Types of Light, was released earlier this month to enthusiastic reviews.
Smith revealed last month that he was battling cancer and was taking a leave of absence from the band's current tour.
In the Bio section on TV on the Radio's website, the bandmates talk about the tiring cycle of recording and touring, with lead singer Tunde Adebimpe saying he spent a lot of time after Dear Science just writing and drawing pictures.
Added Smith: "It allows us to do the other things we want to do, or to just decompress, and then come back to the band with some focus. We don't ever want to feel like we have to do this, that it's a job, necessarily."
