Yes, even superheroes have moms, and now we know who'll be raising the newest Clark Kent, Henry Cavill.

Warner Bros., the studio behind director Zack Snyder's upcoming flick, announced that Diane Lane will be joining the family as Martha Kent. It's safe to say that few other maternal figures have played a bigger role in superhero development than Martha.

What swayed the filmmakers to choose the Oscar-nominated actress?

"This was a very important piece of casting for me," Snyder said in a statement, "because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination."

And if there's anyone who can bring a wise, compassionate human element to the story, it's Lane. She was nominated for an Academy Award in 2002 for her role in Unfaithful, the dramatic tale of a wife plunged into equal parts guilt and elation when she begins having a steamy affair.

There are still more pieces to this puzzle that need to fall into place. Who will play Pa Kent? According to Deadline, rumors are swirling that Oscar-winner Kevin Costner could be up for the role. But probably the biggest question mark still out there: Who will be our villain?! General Zod? Lex Luthor? Mr. Mxyzptlk?
