The Writers Guild Likes The Social Network; Sleeper Inception Scores a Surprise Win

Inception is no longer the exception to awards season victories.

The psychological thriller, along with awards season-frontrunner The Social Network, took home top honors at the Writers Guild Awards Saturday evening, with Inception's Christopher Nolan winning the WGA award for Best Original Screenplay and the Facebook flick's Aaron Sorkin grabbing the honors for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Nolan was the surprise winner of the evening, beating out the scripts of Black Swan and The Kids Are All Right, among others. Sorkin's win, however, was predictable, adding to a long list of accolades, including a recent nod at the Golden Globes.

And where was Oscar fave The King's Speech in all of the writing awards hubbub? Well, the film actually wasn't included in the WGA noms, because it didn't qualify under the guild's rules.

But, Nolan and Sorkin weren't the only big winners of the night.

Charles Ferguson, Chad Beck and Adam Bolt followed up Inside Job's win at the Directors Guild Awards, with the financial crisis film scoring Best Documentary Screenplay.

Fresh off their SAG awards win, Modern Family's Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet, who hosted the show on the West Coast, saw their sitcom take home the award for Best Writing in a Comedy Series. Joining the small-screen winners were Mad Men, which took home the drama series nod, and Boardwalk Empire, which won for best new series.
