Finally, Ed O'Neill got some awards love this morning! For the first time, he has been nominated as an individual for his role on Modern Family.
But it has come at a steep price, dear friends.
The nominations are out for the 2011 Screen Actors Guild Awards, and so many deserving TV peeps were left out that really, the mind boggles. (And don't even get us started on Hot in Cleveland's nomination.) No Lea Michele? No Matthew Morrison? No Joel McHale? No Lost? To that end, we have unearthed a shocking conspiracy...
The Al and Pegg Bundy Scandal!
While Katey Segal was (deservingly) nominated on Tuesday for a Golden Globe for Sons of Anarchy, Ed was left out of the running (again). And now that Ed was nominated for a SAG Actor this morning, Katey is conspicuously absent. Clearly these organizations have a one-Bundy-only mandate. A shame given that both Segal and O'Neill should make it on every awards list.
Eric Stonestreet was surprisingly left out in the cold to make way for Ed's first nomination and the inclusion of Ty Burrell. (Can't all the Modern Family guys submit under one name, EricEdTtyJesse O'BurreStoneFerg? Make it so, please!)
And while, um, ground-breaking sitcom gems like TV Land's Hot in Cleveland (say what?!) were nominated, the list of snubs is pretty astounding: Glee got an ensemble nod, and nods for Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch, but Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison were notably absent. (Cleveland's Betty White swiped up Lea's spot—and yes we do know she's a living legend, having scored last year's SAG Lifetime Achievement Award.)
Do the SAG voters have some kind of anti-Glee bias? Perhaps too many of them are not pleased with their number on that ever-growing guest star list.
Also missing entirely in all categories: Community, Friday Night Lights, The Big Bang Theory, Parks & Recreation and The Walking Dead. And Lost did not receive a single nomination for the ensemble or individual acting for it's final season. That, Abed, is the true meaning of lack of payoff. (Little Community humor for ya, there.)
