Is Tom Cruise really feeling the need for speed...again?

The actor's Maverick presence is desired, of course, for a proposed Top Gun sequel being developed at Paramount. But whether or not he wants to pull a Gordon Gekko and reprise one of the most iconic film roles of the 1980s in the oughts remains to be seen.

A rep for Cruise tells E! News that a definite yay or nay on this one is going to take some time.

David Ellison, son of Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison and a licensed aerobatic pilot, has a first-look deal with Paramount and is said to be the driving force (besides all the jet fuel, that is) behind the project. However, a source close to Cruise tells E! News, "There is talk of a sequel, all else that has been written is false."

According to New York magazine's Vulture blog, offers have gone out to Top Gun producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott to captain the sequel ship.
