The Hurt Locker happens in Vegas.
In the latest sweep of accolades for the little indie war flick that could, the Las Vegas Film Critics named The Hurt Locker the year's Best Picture at its 2009 Sierra Awards. The high-octane thriller also picked up Best Director for Kathryn Bigelow, Best Actor for star Jeremy Renner, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing.
Sure beats dusting for land mines.
At this point, The Hurt Locker appears to be a lock for an Oscar nod, having already won top honors from the New York Film Critics Circle, the Los Angeles Film Critics, Boston and San Francisco reviewers, and the Gotham Independent Film Awards. It also made AFI's best-of list and is contending in key Golden Globes and SAG Awards categories.
Best Actress hardware went to newcomer Gabourey Sidibe for Precious, while costar Mo'nique continued her domination of the awards season with a Best Supporting Actress win, as did Inglourious Basterds baddie Christoph Waltz, who's now won nearly every Best Supporting Actor award around.
