Review in a Hurry: Seventeen-year-old Molly Hartley (20 year-old Haley Bennett) is troubled by memories of the time her mom tried to stab her to death at a young age. Technically, that isn't really what we call haunting.
The Bigger Picture: Private school can be tough. Especially when your best friend is a Jesus freak, you experience frequent headaches and bloody noses for no reason and have apparently attracted the attention of the school hunk (Chace Crawfrod) despite being an obvious basket case. Yep, that's the life of Molly Hartley.
Here's the thing, filmmakers: If you hope to scare us with any of this, at least cast someone truly terrifying in the role of Molly's mother, who shows up for periodic hallucinations. Louise Fletcher, for instance, could do that kind of shtick in her sleep. But no, there's nothing scary about a mom who's shorter and less imposing than her daughter, even if she is a supernaturally powered vision.
It turns out there's a little more to the story than meets the eye, but much as we'd like to spoil the ending for you, that would be wrong.
Also: There's a prologue in which another young girl is harassed by her dad, ten years earlier, and then gets into a nasty traffic accident. It never has any relevance whatsoever to the rest of the movie. Way to go, director Mickey Liddell. You really suck.
The 180—a Second Opinion: It's truly hard to imagine how this movie could be enjoyed, but perhaps if you watched it with a bunch of intoxicated drag queens and asked them to act out everything they see onscreen that could work.
