Are you sitting down, Directioners? Because you might want to brace yourselves before hearing this bit of television development news: Zayn Malik—yes, he of the perfect "You and I" high note—is working on a new television series inspired by his time in One Direction.

The new series, titled Boys, will follow the formation of a wildly successful boy band and the excitement—and intense pressure—that comes along with the success. The show is being written by the creators of The CW's Beauty and the Beast, Sherri Cooper Landsman and Jennifer Levin, and produced by Law & Order mastermind Dick Wolf and his wife, Noelle Wolf.

Boys will follow Empire's lead in that it'll release original music in conjunction with the series.

"Dick Wolf is a legend, and the opportunity to work with him and NBC to create a compelling drama series is awesome," Zayn said in a statement announcing the news.

NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke praised the "authentic" perspective Zayn will add to the new scripted series. "Zayn certainly brings an authentic point of view to this world where kids are catapulted into fame at a dizzying speed. On top of our excitement around the creative ideas being discussed, we have a lot of respect for the musical and digital ambitions behind the project," she said in a statement.

There's no word on a potential premiere date for the ambitious project, nor any intel on whether Zayn's fellow One Direction members Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson will give their input. But hey—at least it's something to hold on to while 1D continues on its indefinite hiatus!
