Johnny Depp has always had an eccentric sense of style, so when he was first seen wearing a "chick's ring" on his engagement finger, it didn't seem all that unusual. As it turns out, the Transcendence star has been rocking the rock he gave his fiancée Amber Heard when he popped the question in late 2013.

"I have a female engagement ring," the 50-year-old actor admitted on Thursday's Late Show.

"It's not typical for a man to wear an engagement ring, is it?" host David Letterman asked.

"No," Depp admitted. "It was too big for my girl."

Depp joked that "it's a big fallacy" that people know each other's ring size without asking, which is why he's now wearing the sparkler. Why didn't he return it instead? "I put it on," he said. "She has the other one that fits." Not many people have questioned his new bling, either. "I think people are scared to comment. 'Why? Why is a grown man wearing a woman's engagement ring?' Because it fit."

Luckily, the movie star has gotten approval from Heard's father, a Texas-based contractor. "He's about the closest thing to Hunter S. Thompson I've ever met," Depp said, referring to the journalist and author he played in the 2011 movie The Rum Diary, where he met his future wife. "We get along well."

Speaking to Today's Savannah Guthrie in an interview airing Friday, Depp raved about the 27-year-old actress who swept him off his feet. "She's a wonderful girl," Depp said of Heard, who next stars in London Fields. "She's sharp as a tack. A southern belle and sweet as can be, and very good for me."
