Kellan Lutz OK With Not Being Robert Pattinson

Actor says he was asked to audition for the role of Edward but found Emmett a lot more fun

Imagine for a minute somebody else other than Robert Pattinson playing Edward Cullen.

Yeah, neither can we.

But it could have been the case had Twilight saga costar Kellan Lutz followed through on repeated requests by the powers that be to audition for the role.

"I was doing [HBO's] Generation Kill and was sent the script in Africa," Kellan told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show Monday morning. "I put it off, then finally read it and by the time I got back to L.A., they said, 'OK, are you ready to audition for Edward?'

"I said, 'I don't want to play Edward. He's too complex, too depressing for me.'"

When asked, however, if he might be interested in the part of Emmett, Kellan says he revisted the script, thought it was "one of those fun-loving characters that I like to play" and, well, we all know the rest.

But in hindsight, does he have any regrets?

"No," insists Kellan. "Fame is fame. And Rob is handling it like a champ. Everything that comes with this whole phenomenon is breathtaking. I don't think anybody could prepare you for something like this."

Which is, perhaps, why Kellan is more than content with allowing the glaring spotlight to focus more on the likes of R.Pattz, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, while he "can just float."

"I'm so happy with Emmett," he says. "I don't care to be famous."

"Um, breaking news. You are famous," interjects Ryan, despite the fact that there's only four fans peering through the radio station's window to catch a glimpse of Kellan.

But then again, that's probably just the way he likes it.

Kellan will be getting plenty of attention tonight, though, at the New Moon premiere in Los Angeles.
