TV on the Radio Bassist Has Lung Cancer

Gerard Smith, longtime member of New York-based quintet, missing out on an upcoming tour after being diagnosed with the disease

Some sad news for fans of TV on the Radio: The band's bassist, Gerard Smith, has lung cancer.

On its official site today, the band said its longtime member will miss out on an upcoming tour after being diagnosed with the disease upon finishing work on the experimental rockers' new album, Nine Types of Light.

"Gerard is fortunate enough to have health insurance and is receiving excellent medical care. Already we have seen dramatic results," the group said.

"Combine that with Gerard's legendarily willful disposition and it might just be cancer that has the problem. We appreciate your concern and support for Gerard and his family."

We wish him a speedy recovery.
