Before New York Times reporter Jayson Blair made real headlines for his phony news stories, Stephen Glass (Hayden Christensen) had already faked his way into the spotlight. Writer-director Billy Ray's drama chronicles the real-life tale of how a gifted young writer made up bogus articles for the venerable New Republic magazine. Glass tricked the Republic's staff with a combination of sociopathic manipulation and geeky charm--something Star Wars' Christensen expresses effortlessly in this great performance, opposite a cool cast of comers (Peter Sarsgaard, Steve Zahn, ChloŽ Sevigny).
While we never find out why Glass did what he did, the tale of how it all fell apart is a good one. And, as far as we know, totally believable.
